The Abandoned Fire Extinguisher

Another day with a very strange light - only a very special, too long winter can produce such a light in this region: the sun was lurking weakly through a thick, milky sky, producing two distinct shadows for each thing:
One very "light" shadow, but with sharp contours, caused by the direct sunlight, and another darker shadow, but one with blurry contours, caused by the wide white sky that had become another light source by itself, bedding each thing on some sort of grey cushion.


Sorry, just another lousy photography of a drawing on Canson JA 50x65 cm (19.7x25.6 in.), too large for my scanner.
The abandoned fire extinguisher, in this context, seemed to have the brighter sunlight of the past on its conscience.
This is how I've found it:

Grass Shadows Nr. 11

This drawing is made on Canson JA 50 x 65 cm (19.7 x 25.6 in.), so I haven't even tried to scan it, and can only post a mediocre photography.

It's the shadow of some plant on a day with a very soft light. Some grey dots, shadows of tiny blossoms, seem to be suspended in the air: The blades they grow on are so thin, they have no shadow.

Landscape Nr. 38

This is the twelfth in the series "zooming into my drawings", and I think I'll stop here.
Or maybe not.


Dies ist die zwölfte Zeichnung in der Serie "Ich zoome in meine eigene Zeichnung hinein", und ich denke, es ist auch die letzte.
Aber vielleicht auch nicht.

Ceci est le douzième dessin dans la série "Je zoome dans mes propres dessins", et je pense que c'en est aussi le dernier.
Mais ... peut-être pas.

Aujourd'hui, j'ai même utilisé un peu de peinture acrylique blanche.

Landschaft Nr. 36

Zu dieser Zeichnung gibt es nicht viel zu sagen ausser dem, was man auch so sieht: Ich habe hier mal so richtig die Farben explodieren lassen... und es ist immer noch derselbe Ort, noch etwas näher rangezoomt.


Il n'y a pas grand chose à dire sur ce dessin à part ce que l'on voit de toute façon: Pour une fois j'ai vraiment fait exploser les couleurs! Et c'est toujours au même endroit les mes dessins précédents.

There's not much to say about this drawing, except what you see anyway: The colors are really exploding in this one... and it's still the same place as in the previous drawings, just zoomed a little closer again.

Landscape #35

The specialists among you have certainly recognized it - yes I confirm, I was listening Maro Ajemian's interpretation of John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano, one of my all-time favourite Rock'n'Roll discs, while I was drawing this (still the same spot as in the previous works, just a little closer).


Immer noch derselbe Ort wie in den letzten Zeichnungen, nur noch ein bisschen näher dran. Ein heisser Tag war das heute wieder, so heiss dass ich mir beim Zeichnen die Socken auszog! Aber zum Glück war's ja draussen.

Toujours au même endroit, juste un peu plus près. D'ailleurs, le carton de l'ouvrier de l'autre jour était toujours là.

Paysage no. 34

Quelque chose d'étrange m'est arrivé cette fois-ci.
En arrivant à mon endroit habituel, j'entends quelqu'un parler très fort, mais d'abord je ne vois personne... je m'approche, puis je comprends - quelqu'un s'est allongé par terre, exactement sur la petite clairière où je m'installe d'habitude, où le sol est un peu dégagé (sinon il y a des buissons partout), il s'était installé sur un grand bout de carton plié, comme un S.D.F., et il était en train de monologuer. Un fou? Je m'approche encore, mais c'est un homme plutôt propre, il parle au téléphone dans une langue que je ne comprends pas, mais on dirait qu'il engueule quelqu'un (je pense à la pie de la dernière fois ... elle s'est transformé en homme et descendu de l'arbre...).
Pendant un instant j'hésite, est-ce que je m'installe à côté de lui pour dessiner? Mais il parle trop fort, je ne supporte pas les coléreux, je vais un peu plus loin - ce que j'aurais dû faire depuis longtemps peut-être: je m'approche physiquement de mon sujet.
Peu après, je vois l'homme partir, apparemment c’est un ouvrier du chantier à côté, il prenait juste sa pause. Et il a laissé son carton.


Etwas eigenartiges ist mir diesmal passiert. Als ich kurz nach Mittag an meinem vertrauten Zeichenort ankam, hörte ich jemanden ziemlich laut reden, sah aber zunächst niemanden. Ich trat näher heran, und dann verstand ich: Jemand hatte sich auf den Boden gelegt, genau auf der kleinen Lichtung wo ich mich sonst hinsetzte - wo der kniehohe Bewuchs, der sonst fast alles bedeckte, ein bisschen Platz gelassen hatte. Ein Mann hatte sich auf ein grosses Stück Karton gelegt, wie ein Obdachloser, und monologisierte lautstark. Ein Verrückter? Ich trat noch etwas näher, aber der Mann war eher sauber, er sprach am Telefon - in einer Sprache die ich zwar nicht verstand, aber so als würde er jemanden beschimpfen (ich denke an die Elster vom letzten Mal ... war sie Mensch geworden und vom Baum herabgestiegen?)
Einen Augenblick lang zögerte ich - setze ich mich zum Zeichnen neben ihn? Aber er redete zu laut, und ich ertrug das Geschimpfe nicht, ich ging etwas weiter - was ich vielleicht schon lange hätte tun sollen: Ich näherte mich meinem Objekt physisch an.
Kurze Zeit später sah ich den Mann davongehen. Es war offenbar ein Arbeiter von der Baustelle nebenan, der nur seine Mittagspause machte. Seinen Karton hat er dagelassen.


Something strange happened this time: When I arrived at my usual drawing place, shortly after noon, I heard somebody talking very loud, but I didn't see anyone. I approached a little more, then I understood: Somebody had laid down on the ground, exactly on the little glade where I usually sat down, where the undergrowth that covered large parts of the place had left some free space. A man was lying on a large piece of cardboard, like a vagrant, monologizing loudly - a fool? I stepped a little closer, but the person was rather clean, he spoke on a cell phone, in a language I didn't understand, but as if he was blustering at somebody (it made me think of the magpie of the last time ... had it become a human being and descended from the tree?)
I hesitated - should I sit down next to him to draw? But he talked too loud, I couldn't stand his blusters, I went on and did what I possibly should have done much earlier: I approached my object physically.
A few minutes later I saw the man walk away. Apparently it was a worker from the building site nearby, who had taken his lunch break there. He abandoned his cardboard on my glade.

Landschaft Nr. 33

Der Wind wehte heute stark, heulte fast. Schwankende Pflanzen stachen mir von hinten in die Arme. Mit jedem Windstoss klatschten haufenweise Piniennadeln auf mein Blatt und meine Arme nieder. Hoch oben über mir schimpfte eine aufgebrachte Elster - ich weiss nicht ob über den Wind oder darüber, dass mein Stift auf das Papier hämmerte wie ein Specht, ich war ja in Eile, meine Zeit war knapp und der Wind versuchte mehrmals, mir die Zeichnung zu entreissen, bevor sie fertig war.


Le vent soufflait fort, hurlait presque. Les plantes autour de moi bougeaient, me piquaient dans les bras par dérrière. Des tas d'aiguilles de pins claquaient sur ma feuille et sur me bras avec chaque nouvelle rafale. Une pie excitée rouspétait très haut au-dessus de moi, je ne sais si c'était contre le vent, ou parce que mon crayon martelait mon papier énergiquement comme un pic, j'étais pressé car j'avais peu de temps, et le vent faisait plusieurs tentatives de m'arracher mon dessin avant que je l'eusse terminé.

The wind was almost howling today. Moving plants prickled my elbows from behind. Bunches of pine-needles smacked down on my sheet and on my arms with every new blast. An excited magpie blustered high above me, I don't know if it was against the wind or because my pencil hammered down onto the paper vigorously like a woodpecker, hastily because my time was short, and the wind made several attempts to snatch my drawing before I finished it.

Paysage no. 31

I'm afraid this might become a bit boring as a subject for a blog, but at least for myself this series is getting an unexpectedly fascinating dimension.
I don't think I really go more into detail as I zoom further into the landscape, but on a different level I have the impression the scene is getting clearer - for example, landscape nr. 31 seems to have much more depth than nr 27, 28, or 29, and even if the relative distances or positions of the various objects are not at all more realistic than in the beginning, the whole drawing looks better sculpted.

J'ai bien peur que cette serie ne soit pas spécialement intéressante comme sujet dans un blog, mais pour moi-même au moins, elle commence à avoir une dimension fascinante inattendue.
Je ne crois pas que je rentre vraiment plus dans les détails au fur et à mesure que je 'zoome' dans le paysage, mais à un autre niveau la scène devient plus claire - par exemple, je trouve qu'il y a ici beaucoup plus de profondeur que dans les paysages no. 27, 28, ou encore 29, et même si les distances ou les positions relatives des différents objets ne deviennent pas du tout plus réalistes qu'au début, tout le dessin a l'air mieux sculpté.

Ich fürchte zwar, dass diese Serie als Thema in einem Blog ein bisschen langweilig werden kann, aber für mich selbst bekommt sie langsam eine unerwartet faszinierende Dimension.
Ich denke nicht, dass ich mit fortschreitendem Heranzoomen tatsächlich weitere Einzelheiten herausarbeite, aber auf einer anderen Ebene wird die Szene irgendwie klarer - zum Beispiel finde ich, dass Landschaft Nr. 31 viel mehr Tiefe hat als Nr. 27, 28, order auch 29, und auch wenn die einzelnen Grössenverhältnisse oder Positionen der verschiedenen Bildelemente nicht naturgetreuer werden als am Anfang, sieht die ganze Zeichnung bildhauerisch doch besser herausgearbeitet aus.

Landschaft Nr. 30

Landscpae Nr. 30 is, you're guessing it, a zoom into Landscape Nr. 29.
As usual I've tried to take a copy of Landscape Nr. 29 on site, but I had transferred my scan too quickly from one disk to another, so that a part of the left half was missing, and I had no time to print it out either, so I took my laptop with me instead of a paper copy. In my new drawing of course I could have "filled up" the part that was missing on the scan, but instead I took the idea and left this part white as well.

Comme vous l'avez deviné, mon paysage no. 30 est à nouveau une version agrandie du paysage no. 29. Comme d'habitude, je voulais prendre une copie de mon dessin précédent sur site, mais je n'avais pas le temps de l'imprimer (j'ai donc travaillé avec mon laptop sur site), et en plus, lorsque j'ai transféré mes scans d'un disque à l'autre, je n'avais apparemment pas attendu assez longtemps, de sorte que la moité gauche n'a pas été transférée complètement. Bien sûr, dans mon nouveau dessin j'aurais très bien pu "remplir" la partie qui manque dans le scan, mais j'ai repris cette idée et je l'ai laissée blanche également.

Landschaft Nr. 30 ist ebenfalls ein Hineinzoomen in meine vorige Zeichnung.
Wie gewohnt, wollte ich eine Kopie von Landschaft Nr. 29 mitnehmen, aber ich hatte nicht nur keine Zeit, sie auszudrucken, sondern hatte auch meine Scans zu schnell auf mein Laptop übertragen, so dass von der linken Hälfte der Zeichnung der untere Teil fehlt... ich haber also mit der unvollständigen Zeichnung auf meinem Laptop vor Ort gearbeitet, und habe entschieden, denselben Teil, der auf dem Scan fehlt, auf meiner neuen Zeichnung weiss zu lassen.

Landscape Nr. 29

Continuing the process of zooming into my own drawings, for Landscape nr. 29 I also took a copy of Landscape nr. 28 and went to the same place again - so nr. 29 again is a mixture of copying my previous drawing and observing the same scene again in nature.
What is funny this time is that at first sight, you might as well think that nr. 28 is closer to the scene than nr. 29, but the opposite is true - and probably it's only the street lamp in the upper left corner, which has wandered closer to the edge of my sheet, that allows us to see this clearly.

J'ai continué le processus d'agrandissement de mes propres dessins: Ainsi, pour ce paysage no. 29, j'ai pris une copie du no. 28, et je me suis rendu au même endroit. J'ai commencé par plier une bordure de quelques centimètres de chaque côté de ma copie en arrière pour définir mon champ visuel. Ensuite, le paysage no. 29 est à nouveau un mélange d'une copie du paysage no. 28 et d'une nouvelle observation de la nature.
Ce que je trouve drôle cette fois-ci, c'est qu'au premier coup d'oeil on pourrait croire que c'est plutôt no. 28 qui est un léger agrandissement de no. 29 ... mais c'est bien le contraire. C'est peut-être uniquement le lampadaire en haut à gauche, qui s'est rapproché un peu plus du bord de ma feuille, qui permet de le voir clairement.

Mit Landschaft Nr. 29 habe ich den Prozess des Hineinzoomens in meine eigenen Zeichnungen weiterverfolgt: Ich nahm eine Kopie von Landschaft Nr. 28 wieder mit an dieselbe Stelle. Um mir meinen Bildausschnitt festzulegen, habe ich von dieser Kopie an allen vier Rändern ein paar Zentimeter nach hinten gefaltet. Und so ist Landschaft Nr. 29 wieder eine Mischung aus einer Kopie meiner vorigen Zeichnung, und einer neueren Naturbeobachtung.
Was mich diesmal überrascht hat, war, dass man fast glauben könnte, Landschaft Nr. 28 sei eine Vergrösserung von Nr. 29, aber es ist tatsächlich umgekehrt.
Deutlich wird das vielleicht nur dank der Strassenlaterne oben links, die noch weiter an den Rand meines Blattes gerückt ist.

Landschaft Nr. 28

Today I made another drawing at the same place, and I also had a print of the last drawing with me, so this drawing is partly a copy of the last one (slightly zoomed in), and partly a new observation of the same scene.
I was surprized to see that in my last drawing, apparently I completely ignored the two big trees slightly to the right of the centre of my field of vision.

Aujourd'hui j'ai refait un dessin au même endroit que la dernière fois, mais j'avais pris avec moi une copie de mon dernier dessin - le dessin d'aujourd'hui est donc en partie une copie du dernier, légèremet zoomé, et en partie une nouvelle observation de la même scène.
J'étais surpris de constater que la dernière fois, j'avais apparemment complètement ignoré les deux grands arbres au centre-droit de mon champ de vision.

Heute habe ich nochmal am selben Ort gezeichnet, und ich hatte auch eine Kopie meiner letzten Zeichnung dabei, so dass das heutige Blatt zum Teil eine Kopie meiner letzten Zeichnung ist - leicht "hineingezoomt" -, und zum Teil eine neue Beobachtung derselben Szene.
Ich habe dabei mit Überraschung festgestellt, dass ich beim letzten Mal offenbar die beiden grossen Bäume leicht rechts im Blickfeld völlig ignoriert habe.

Paysage no. 27

Ah, so you're still alive? some of you may wonder.
Yes I am. Here is a drawing mainly done with a "Zulu" pencil, but you can find traces of graphite and a red colour pencil in it too.
It was a very hot and dry day (the whole sun was on fire...) Ah yes, and I'm sure some of you have recognized it: I was listening to Throbbing Gristle's "Part Two" while I was drawing.
(No no, there's no sound embedded in this post - why are you asking?)

Voici un autre paysage, en plein A3, un format relativement grand pour moi, et surtout dessiné avec un crayon "Zulu". Il faisait très chaud, et, comme la plupart d'entre vous l'ont certainement reconnu, j'ai écouté "Part Two" de Throbbing Gristle pendant que je dessinais.
(Mais non, il n'y a pas de son dans ce billet - pourquoi la question?)

Landschaft Nummer 27. Heiss war es, die ganze Sonne brannte nur so dass es knisterte, und in meinem iPod lief "Part Two" von Throbbing Gristle.
