Les Ponchettes, Nice (Tassenschatten Nr. 15)
Noch ein alter Schatten. Eigentlich wollte ich die Kontur hier auch noch "ausmalen", aber dann gefiel mir die Zeichnung doch so in ihrer "Unfertigkeit".
Un café au restaurant Les Ponchettes à Nice. Je voulais toujours 'colorier' le contour, mais le dessin a fini par me plaire tel quel, dans son état inachevé.
I finally like this drawing in its 'unfinishedness', so I haven't 'filled' the contour as I usually do.

Last week's shadow
Auf der Suche nach geeigneten Grasschatten bin ich neulich auf diese Blume gestossen, die zwar ziemlich klein, aber durch ihr leuchtendes Weiss doch relativ gut zu sehen ist, aber sie scheint sich an schattigen Plätzen wohler zu fühlen als in der Sonne, so hat es mich doch ein paar wertvolle Momente gekostet, um ein geeignetes Exemplar zu finden, das nicht von viel grösseren Pflanzen überschattet wurde.
A la recherche d'ombres d'herbe, j'ai trouvé cette fleur récemment, qui est plutôt petite, mais qui se voit pourtant assez bien grâce à son blanc éclatant, pourtant elle semble préférer des emplacements pas trop ensolleillés, ce qui m'a fait perdre quelques moments précieux pour en trouver un exemplaire adapté qui n'était pas trop ombragé par de plus grandes plantes.
When I was looking around for grass shadows recently, I found this flower, which was rather small, although well visible thanks to its brilliant white, however it seems to prefer places not in full sunlight, so it cost me some precious moments to find an adequante specimen that was not too much overshadowed by a larger plant.

When I was looking around for grass shadows recently, I found this flower, which was rather small, although well visible thanks to its brilliant white, however it seems to prefer places not in full sunlight, so it cost me some precious moments to find an adequante specimen that was not too much overshadowed by a larger plant.

Midnight In Paris
Woddy Allen's latest masterpiece made me think of the book I'm reading these days, "Die Welt von Gestern" (The World Of Yesterday) by Stefan Zweig. Like the movie Midnight in Paris, this book also, for some time, introduces us to the Paris of the 1920s, and to famous artists, writers, and musicians, as if you'd really be there ... in a time that looks like a Golden Age today.
The tragic difference however is that while Woody Allen's movie concludes that the present is just as fascinating as a past Golden Age may have been, Zweig's book does the very contrary and shows how those times really were a Golden Age, and really stopped when the fascist regimes rolled over Europe to end them up in blood and hatred.
If there's anyone out there planning to travel back to 1942, I suggest you take a copy of Midnight in Paris, and show it to the Zweigs to ease their despair. They could almost be still alive today.

Simplicity (Cup of Coffee nr. 12)
Lorena, I'd like to answer you with this new post rather than in a comment.
Yes, in general I am with other people when I drink a coffee, indeed it's some kind of social act to have a coffee together, similar to a cigarette for those who smoke (I don't).
However, I noticed that sometimes I just want to go somewhere alone to have a coffee in order to make a new drawing, and that was the case for nr. 11.
To play with terms, you may say there's a mini-paradigm shift in the artistic act "to draw the shadow of a cup of coffee": First, I made a drawing in order to make good use of the time spent during a coffee break: Thanks to the coffee, there was a drawing.
Now from time to time it's the other way round: Because I need to draw, I'd go and get a cup of coffee.
Art rules.
You mentioned Exploring the subject matter: Yes, I love series of drawings, I love each single drawing, but in a series, theres a new movement, a new energy emerging.
Often we start with a simple idea, executed with simple means, and after some repetition and improvement we look for complication, variation, brilliance, and then we go a long long road, exploring different ways, and once we've made a long journey we finally find out that we're almost back where we started: In simplicity - but a wiser one: One that knows that there's different ways, but that there's no right or wrong, and that you can as well leave it all behind and concentrate on the essential.
This time I have come back to a simple form, just the shadow of the ensemble "cup and saucer", abandoning the shadow of the cup on the saucer, as well as the place where the object touches the surface - just "the shadow that touched the paper".

Ich hätte gerne auch den Schatten meines Pain au Chocolat gezeichnet, aber dann wär mir doch das Papier zu fettig geworden.
Sure, it would have been nice to draw the shadow of my "pain au chocolat" as well, but then my sketchbook would have become too fatty... hmmm that might be an idea for another drawing: Fatty shadow.
Pendant que j'étais en train d'attendre mon tour dans cette boulangerie l'autre jour, un jeune homme avec un regard un peu nerveux, qui semblait attendre quelqu'un, s'addressa tout d'un coup à pleusieurs personnes qui entraient avec un grand chien, leur disant d'un ton sévère: "on n'entre pas avec un chien dans une boulangerie!". Puis il l'a répété encore une fois, plus fort cette fois, car les gens ne s'y attendaient pas et n'avaient pas compris qu'on s'addressait à eux, et le ton montait, ils lui répondirent que ce n'était quand même pas écrit devant la porte ... Je m'attendais au pire, mais heureusement tout le monde s'est vite calmé.

L'un des inconvénients du MAMAC, c'est qu'ils ne sont même pas fichus d'ouvrir le café ... tant pis, alors on va sur la place Garibaldi.
Nach der Ausstellung von Wim Delvoye im MAMAC wären wir gern in das Café da oben nebenan gegangen, aber das ist ungefähr jedesmal geschlossen wenn man es mal braucht. Selber schuld, dann geht man eben auf die Place Garibaldi.

The Abandoned Fire Extinguisher
Another day with a very strange light - only a very special, too long winter can produce such a light in this region: the sun was lurking weakly through a thick, milky sky, producing two distinct shadows for each thing:
One very "light" shadow, but with sharp contours, caused by the direct sunlight, and another darker shadow, but one with blurry contours, caused by the wide white sky that had become another light source by itself, bedding each thing on some sort of grey cushion.
Sorry, just another lousy photography of a drawing on Canson JA 50x65 cm (19.7x25.6 in.), too large for my scanner.
The abandoned fire extinguisher, in this context, seemed to have the brighter sunlight of the past on its conscience.
This is how I've found it:

Grass Shadows Nr. 11
This drawing is made on Canson JA 50 x 65 cm (19.7 x 25.6 in.), so I haven't even tried to scan it, and can only post a mediocre photography.
It's the shadow of some plant on a day with a very soft light. Some grey dots, shadows of tiny blossoms, seem to be suspended in the air: The blades they grow on are so thin, they have no shadow.

Shadow of a cup of coffee, nr. 9
Shadow of a coffee after lunch with Anny and Christian.
Once again, I helped myself with a grey tone to solve the struggle between the saucer, the shadow of the saucer, and the part of the shadow of the cup that's on the saucer ... otherwise I would have preserved just the shadow of the ensemble cup+saucer, like in Coffee Shadow nr. 6.
L'ombre d'un café après une excellente souris d'agneau chez nos amis Anny et Christian.
Comme je l'ai déjà mentionné avant-hier - au moins dans les textes allemand et anglais - je me demande à chaque fois si je dois "colorier" l'endroit où la tasse touche le papier - d'un côté, cet endroit devrait évidemment être noir, car la lumière n'y arrive pas - mais d'un autre côté, quand on regarde l'ombre de la tasse, cet endroit-là n'en fait pas vraiment partie, car il est couvert par ... la tasse.
Donc, la dernière fois je l'ai "colorié" en gris.
Cette fois-ci, mon doute s'est étendu à l'ombre de la soucoupe.
Si je dessine uniquement l'ombre de la soucoupe, je perds le plaisir de l'ombre de la tasse dans la soucoupe. Or si je ne dessine pas l'ombre de la soucoupe - pour préserver la totalité de l'ombre de la tasse - je dois renoncer à une partie trop importante de mon sujet...
Alors j'ai encore une fois fait le compromis d'un mélange entre les deux - peut-être pas très logique, peut-être pas assez conséquent, mais moi je me comprends...
