Handheld

"Handheld" normally refers to some electronic device, but I call this drawing 'handheld' because I made it standing, simply holding the paper in the air in one hand - the paper was sufficiently rigid to allow it. I just didn't want to sit down because the light was more beautiful from the standing position.

Pour comprendre le titre de ce dessin il faut savoir que pour une fois, j'ai travaillé sans support - le papier était suffisamment rigide pour permettre de le tenir dans la main - simplement parce que je voulais rester debout, car la vue était moins belle depuis la position assise.

Der Titel dieser Zeichnung soll nur darauf hinweisen, dass ich hier stehend und ohne Unterlage gearbeitet habe - das Papier war stabil genug um dies zu erlauben. Ich wollte einfach nur stehen bleiben weil der Anblick aus der Sitzposition nicht so schön war.

Place Saétone and Kofi

Hier j'ai fait ce dessin de la place Saétone (à Nice bien sûr) depuis la terrasse du restaurant «l'Albatros » où ma fille participait à un tournoi d'échecs.
Si vous me dites que mon dessin n'est pas tout à fait fini, alors je vous donne tout à fait raison: après un certain temps je m'intéressais plus au portrait de ce monsieur qui s'était arrêté pour me regarder dessiner. Je lui ai demandé s'il avait quelques minutes pour s'asseoir pour que je fasse son portrait, et il était d'accord.
Il s'appelle Kofi, et il travaille dans ce même restaurant, l'Albatros.

Yesterday I made this drawing of the Saétone place (in Nice), from the terrace of the restaurant "l'Albatros", where my daughter participated in a chess tournament.
If you think my drawing looks a bit unfinished, I must agree with you: After a while I was more interested in the portrait of this man who had arrived and stopped to watch me drawing. I asked him if he had a few minutes time to sit down and let me draw him, and he agreed.
His name is Kofi, and he works in that very restaurant, l'Albatros.

Diese Zeichnung von der 'place Saétone' in Nizza habe ich gestern von der Terrasse des Restaurants "l'Albatros" aus gemacht, in welchem meine Tochter an einem Schachturnier teilnahm.
Wenn sie auch finden dass meine Zeichnung noch nicht ganz fertig ist, haben sie sicher recht: Nach einer Weile interessierte ich mich viel mehr für das Porträt dieses Mannes, der inzwischen gekommen und stehengeblieben war, um mir beim Zeichnen zuzuschauen.
Ich fragte ihn, ob er ein bisschen Zeit hätte um sich zu setzen, damit ich ihn zeichnen könne, und er war einverstanden.
Sein Name ist Kofi, und er arbeitet in genau dem Restaurant, "l'Albatros".

After a workshop of several days at the music academy of Cuneo (Italy), Elliott Sharp presented some compositions with the "ensemble elettroacustico del conservatorio di Cuneo" last night. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.

Der Boden und die Pflanzen waren noch ganz nass vom Regen als ich zum Zeichnen hinausging, so dass ich es mir gefallen ließ, hier viel Schwarz einzusetzen.

It's an interesting architecture and my drawing doesn't really show a lot of it, but after a few discarded drawings (again), this one suddenly seemed to know better than myself what I was looking for...

Athena

The Athena building in Sophia Antipolis ... I struggled quite a bit with this view, couldn't get anything satisfying on paper for several days - probably due to the complex geometrical forms being interrupted by the trees, but that's just what is so interesting in this place.
This solution here works fine for me, and I think it's because I rather 'painted' with a long arm, instead of drawing meticulously with the hand directly on the paper as I tried the other days.
I also set the contours of the building only once the large forms were already there, this method often seems to work better than the other way round.

Studying Old Masters, pt. 2

The Epsom Derby, after Théodore Géricault (1821).
I had bought a postcard of this painting a long time ago, I don't remember where exactly but probably it was in the Louvre, where you can see the original today. I've had an undescribable fascination for this painting, and I knew that I was going to use it one day - so here's the result. I really enjoyed doing this drawing.

J'ai une carte postale de ce tableau, et je ne me souviens plus exactement où je l'ai achetée mais cela doit avoir été au Louvre, puisqu'elle indique sur le dos que ce tableau se trouve au Louvre, par contre je me souviens très bien de la fascination que ce tableau exerçait sur moi - je savais qu'un jour j'allais m'en servir. Voici donc le résultat. Je me suis régalé.

Auch von diesem Gemälde hatte ich seit langem eine Postkarte, schon so lange, dass ich nicht mehr sicher bin, wo ich sie gekauft habe, aber es muss wohl im Louvre gewesen sein, denn dort ist das Original ausgestellt. Ich hatte eine unbeschreibliche Faszination für das Bild, und wußte, dass ich eines Tages etwas damit machen würde - hier ist nun also endlich das Resultat. Es hat mir übrigens überraschend viel Spass gemacht.

This evening, La Station in Nice hosted a performance evening called "Aux alentours / De la performance" on the occasion of the publication of the first two numbers of the aperiodical bilingual (French/German) journal "(d)écrire - (be)schreiben" (edited by Jean-Baptiste Ganne).
This drawing shows the poet Cécile Mainardi reading some texts by Antonin Artaud.

Studying Old Masters

The Hesperides, after Hans von Marées (1884/85).
Compared to the original, you will notice that something is missing in this drawing: The original is a tripych, but I my drawing only shows the middle panel. You can see the original in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, where I've bought a postcard of the painting several years ago.

Vous allez remarquer qu'il manque une partie dans mon dessin: Le tableau d'Hans von Marées est un triptyque, mais je n'ai dessiné que la partie du milieu. L'original se trouve dans la Neue Pinakothek à Munich, où j'en ai acheté une carte postale il y a quelques années.

Parked Cars #2

Bon, par rapport à mon dernier dessin on peut se demander pourquoi je dessine des voitures garées, il n'y a rien de moins intéressant. Eh bien je trouvais intéressant comment les surfaces brillantes des voitures réflétaient la lumière, en entrant dans un dialogue avec les contours illuminés des arbres et avec la route qui, en principe plutôt noire, était, elle aussi, brillante - comme la mer - alors qu'elle n'était point mouillée aujourd'hui. Voilà pourquoi.

I agree that after my last drawing, you can wonder why I draw parked cars - nothing's less interesting than parked cars. Well, I found it interesting how the brilliant surfaces of the cars reflected the light, in some sort of dialogue with the illuminated contours of the trees, and with the street which, though its local colour is usually rather black, was also reflecting the light - like the Sea - although it wasn't even wet today. That's why.

I went to Saint Paul de Vence this evening to see a vernissage at Catherine Issert, but it didn't take place - the announced date was wrong (but at least the gallery was open and I liked the current exhibition). Afterwards I made this drawing in the village.

Audible Drawing #2

I made this drawing on the 11th January: It is pencil on 270 g watercolor paper, and comes in a CD jewel case - accompanied by a CD with the sound of the pencil on the paper, recorded during the complete drawing process (41.5 minutes).

It was raining a lot, and I decided to draw in my car - so the environmental noise on this one (besides the pencil) is mainly the radio, and from time to time you can hear the rain becoming louder ... and sometimes I turned the wipers on to see something. (I'll try to add a small audio extract to this post later.)

Recorded to a high quality printable Taiyo Yuden 'Watershield' CDR in a limited edition of one (see below).

Sometimes you make a drawing and you don't know why it just doesn't want to look like what you've tried hard to achieve ... well, my daughter likes this one anyway, so I thought I might post it. (Nice, this afternoon)

Des fois on n'aime pas un dessin qu'on ne trouve pas ce qui aurait pu le sauver, mais les autres l'aiment quand même ... bon, comme ma fille aime celui-ci, je vous le montre... (Nice, Blue Beach, vers 13 h)

Manchmal ist man ziemlich unzufrieden mit einer Zeichnung und weiss nicht, wie man sie hätte retten können - naja, diese hier gefällt immerhin meiner Tocher, darum zeige ich sie trotzdem. (Nizza, heute nachmittag)

Enfin une journée sans pluie (il y en avait peut-être d'autres depuis que j'ai fait le dernier dessin, mais je n'ai pas pu en profiter pour dessiner depuis)!

Endlich mal wieder ein Tag ohne Regen - sogar mit Sonne! (ok das gab's vielleicht schon mal seit meiner letzten Zeichnung, aber ich konnte leider bis heute nicht davon profitieren ...)

Drawing in the rain

It's been raining here for a few days without interruption now, so I decided to make the "drawing under difficult conditions" experience today – an exercise recommended to anyone seriously interested in drawing ;-) – and after some aimless walking in the rain, this dead tree appeared to be a particularly well suited subject.
So I did this drawing standing in the rain with an umbrella and the paper in one hand, and an ink pen in the other... several times I was afraid that the wind would carry away my umbrella, and after a couple of minutes it was really getting chilly.

Comme il pleut quasiment sans interruption depuis quelques jours, j'ai décidé de faire volontairement un «dessin dans des conditions difficiles» aujourd'hui - une exercice intéressante, à recommander à chaque dessinateur ... et j'ai trouvé que cet arbre mort était un sujet particulièrement bien adapté à ces conditions...
Avec le parapluie et le papier dans une main, et le stylo dans l'autre, je dessinais debout. Les gouttes de pluie sur le dessin font évidemment partie du résultat recherché, mais ce qui était moins drôle c'était le vent qui menaçait plusieurs fois d'emporter mon parapluie, et le froid, qui est devenu quand même assez désagréable après quelques minutes.

Seit ein paar Tagen regnet es hier fast ununterbrochen, aber heute habe ich mich dennoch entschieden, "unter schwierigen Bedingungen" zu zeichnen – eine interessante Übung, die ich jedem Zeichner nur ans Herz legen kann – und dieser tote Baum schien mir für eine "Zeichnung im Regen" besonders geeignet.
Mit dem Regenschirm und dem Blatt Papier in der einen Hand, und einem Stift in der anderen Hand, hatte ich mehrmals Angst, dass mir der Wind den Schirm davontragen würde, und nach wenigen Minuten war mir wirklich ziemlich kalt...
