Free Drawing #19

This month, Nice is the port of call of Edward B. Gordon's painting The 1st Year - and, as shown in this drawing, I'm the lucky host! To the right of Edward's painting, you can see the photograph Sandra Toornstra has taken of free drawing #17, that was the drawing I made of the photo Suzanne McDermott has taken of free drawing #16, which was the drawing of the photograph Edward B. Gordon has taken of free drawing #15, the drawing of the photograph Anthony Gripon has taken of free drawing #11, which was the drawing that I've made of the photograph Sarah Wimperis has taken of free drawing #8, which showed the photograph Ed Lisieski shot of my drawing "Building #1".

Ce mois-ci, j'ai l'honneur d'avoir comme illustre invité le tableau de Edward B. Gordon, The 1st Year, que vous voyez au centre de ce dessin. Sur sa droite, c'est la photo que m'a envoyée Sandra Toornstra après avoir reçu le dessin gratuit no. 17, qui montre la photo que m'a envoyée Suzanne McDermott du dessin gratuit no. 16, qui était le dessin de la photo prise par Edward B. In diesem Monat habe ich die Ehre (und die grosse Freude!), Edward B. Gordons Bild The 1st Year bei mir zu Gast zu haben - auf meiner Zeichnung sieht man es in der Mitte. Rechts daneben steht das Foto, das Sandra Toornstra mir (vor langer Zeit schon...) geschickt hat, nachdem sie meine siebzehnte umsonst-Zeichnung erhalten hatte - das war nämlich die Zeichnung, die das Foto zeigte, das Suzanne McDermott mir von Zeichnung Nr. 16 geschickt hat, welche wiederum das Foto zeigte, das Edward B. Gordon höchstselbst mir von der Zeichnung Nr. 15 geschickt hat, jener Zeichnung, auf der man das Foto sah, das Anthony Gripon aufgenommen hat, nachdem er Zeichnung Nr. 11 erhalten hatte - sie wissen schon, die Zeichnung, die das Foto zeigt, das Sarah Wimperis von der Zeichnung Nr. 8 aufgenommen hat, welche das Foto zeigte, das Ed Lisieski von der Zeichnung Building #1 aufgenommen hat! Und das ganze ist jetzt meine neunzehnte umsonst-Zeichnung.

La Brague (Audible Drawing #9)

This is my ninth Audible Drawing, it shows the Brague, a little creek between Châteauneuf de Grasse and Antibes. (Full length 52 minues - I mean, the audio, not la Brague, which is 21 km.)

Mon neuvième dessin audio montre la Brague, un 'fleuve côtier' pas très loin de mon lieu de travail. Je l'ai fait jeudi dernier.

Meine neunte Hörzeichnung zeigt die Brague, einen kleinen Fluss zwischen Châteauneuf de Grasse und Antibes (die Stelle, die ich hier - letzten Donnerstag - gezeichnet habe, ist in Sophia Antipolis).

Sure, this is a very sad drawing. But what makes me think most when I see such scenes is that the driver might as well have been me.
On the recording, of course, you hear a lot of cars passing by while I was drawing.

Je sais que c'est un dessin triste, sinon macabre. Mais ce qui me rend le plus pensif quand je vois une scène pareille, c'est que moi aussi j'aurais pu être à la place de l'automobiliste.
Evidemment, sur l'enregistrement on entend surtout des véhicules qui passaient lorsque j'étais en train de dessiner.

Dies ist zugegebenermassen eine eher makabre Zeichnung. Aber was mich dabei nachdenklich macht, ist, dass das auch mir hätte passieren können.
Auf der Aufnahme hört man passend dazu natürlich noch eine ganze Menge Autos vorbeifahren, während ich zeichnete.

Silent rain (Audible Drawing #7)

Pluie silencieuse / Stiller Regen

I made this drawing on the 19th January, but as always, the post-production took some time ... below is a two-minute-extract of the recording (the entire recording is 39 minutes).
You probably don't see it from the drawing, but it started to rain after a few minutes, and I did most of the drawing holding my umbrella ... it was a very silent rain though, you don't really hear it on the recording.

Voici mon dessin audio du 19 janvier... il a commencé à pleuvoir quelques minutes après que je m'étais installé, et j'ai tenu mon parapluie pendant la plupart du temps, mais c'était une pluie assez silencieuse - sur l'enregistrement on ne l'entend presque pas.

Dies ist also meine Hörzeichnung Nr. 7 vom 19. Januar. Wenige Minuten nachdem ich angefangen hatte zu zeichnen, fing es an zu regnen - aber es war ein sehr stiller Regen, auf der Aufnahme hört man ihn kaum.

Silent Drawing

Originally I didn't want to publish this drawing at all, because it was meant to become an audible drawing (as you may guess from the format, 24 x 12 cm, folded in the middle), but something with my recording setup went wrong this time. Finally I thought, "silent drawing" would make a nice title too. (Comes without CD.)

D'abord je ne voulais pas publier ce dessin: Il devait devenir un dessin audio, d'où le format 24 x 12 cm (plié au milieu), mais mon enregistrement n'a pas marché cette fois-ci. Finalement je me suis dit, "dessin silencieux" serait un bon titre également. (Sans cd)

Erst wollte ich diese Zeichnung gar nicht veröffentlichen, denn - wie man aus dem Format, 24 x 12 cm, mit Falz in der Mitte, wohl erraten kann, es sollte eine Hörzeichnung werden, aber mit meiner Aufnahme ist etwas schiefgelaufen. Schließlich dachte ich, "Schweigende Zeichnung" ist auch kein schlechter Titel. (Ohne CD)

With my wife on the sofa watching The Godfather part 3 on tv, I'm trying to navigate a little farther away from naturalism to find my way into the new year. Not sure if I can keep on course, though...

Fortune

Fortune being an excellent title for a blog post at the end of the year - this is, among other things, what I wish all of you for the new year - I didn't want to miss the occasion to draw this lady with her sparkling eyes, a friend and neighbour of my mother-in-law, who had invited her yesterday afternoon. Fortune is her first name.

De la fortune, c'est une des choses que je vous souhaite pour la nouvelle année, mais Fortune c'est aussi le prénom de cette dame au regard étincelant, une amie et voisine de ma belle-mère.

"Fortune" ist natürlich ein willkommener Titel für einen Blogeintrag am Jahresende, und darum wollte ich es mir nicht entgehen lassen, diese reizende Dame mit funkelndem Blick zu zeichnen, die das Vergnügen hat, mit Vornamen Fortune zu heissen. Sie ist eine alte Freundin und jetzt Nachbarin meiner Schwiegermutter, zu der sie gestern zum Kaffee gekommen war.

Audible Drawing #6

This is my Audible Drawing # 6 from the 3rd December 2008.
I only wanted to post it once the CD is ready, but I recognize it will take a little more time and I don't want to remain silent any longer... So here is the drawing, and a little extract to listen. (If you don't hear a lot, that's normal! I'm only drawing!)

Normalement je ne voulais pas mettre ce dessin en ligne avant d'avoir fini le CD, mais je vois que cela va durer encore, et je n'ai plus envie de laisser mon blog sans nouvelles - alors voici le dessin, et un petit extrait à écouter. Ah bien sûr, cela ne fait pas beaucoup de bruit!

Hörzeichnung Nr. 6 - Eigentlich wollte ich die Zeichnung erst zeigen, wenn auch die CD fertig ist, aber das wird noch ein Weilchen dauern - also hier ist die Zeichnung, und unten ein kleiner Auszug zum Anhören. Ich weiss, viel zu hören gibt's da natürlich nicht! Aber so ist das nun mal...

Garbejaire - detail

I scanned this one in grey tones, while the whole drawing in the previous post was scanned in colour, which looks at the same time more and less natural than the original drawing... (hm, I always knew I should learn more about hardware calibration one day...)

I'm trying Bristol paper here, and a slightly lager format than the last sheets - but what a mess to scan that! Had to do it in three parts with my A4 scanner.

Handheld

"Handheld" normally refers to some electronic device, but I call this drawing 'handheld' because I made it standing, simply holding the paper in the air in one hand - the paper was sufficiently rigid to allow it. I just didn't want to sit down because the light was more beautiful from the standing position.

Pour comprendre le titre de ce dessin il faut savoir que pour une fois, j'ai travaillé sans support - le papier était suffisamment rigide pour permettre de le tenir dans la main - simplement parce que je voulais rester debout, car la vue était moins belle depuis la position assise.

Der Titel dieser Zeichnung soll nur darauf hinweisen, dass ich hier stehend und ohne Unterlage gearbeitet habe - das Papier war stabil genug um dies zu erlauben. Ich wollte einfach nur stehen bleiben weil der Anblick aus der Sitzposition nicht so schön war.

Place Saétone and Kofi

Hier j'ai fait ce dessin de la place Saétone (à Nice bien sûr) depuis la terrasse du restaurant «l'Albatros » où ma fille participait à un tournoi d'échecs.
Si vous me dites que mon dessin n'est pas tout à fait fini, alors je vous donne tout à fait raison: après un certain temps je m'intéressais plus au portrait de ce monsieur qui s'était arrêté pour me regarder dessiner. Je lui ai demandé s'il avait quelques minutes pour s'asseoir pour que je fasse son portrait, et il était d'accord.
Il s'appelle Kofi, et il travaille dans ce même restaurant, l'Albatros.

Yesterday I made this drawing of the Saétone place (in Nice), from the terrace of the restaurant "l'Albatros", where my daughter participated in a chess tournament.
If you think my drawing looks a bit unfinished, I must agree with you: After a while I was more interested in the portrait of this man who had arrived and stopped to watch me drawing. I asked him if he had a few minutes time to sit down and let me draw him, and he agreed.
His name is Kofi, and he works in that very restaurant, l'Albatros.

Diese Zeichnung von der 'place Saétone' in Nizza habe ich gestern von der Terrasse des Restaurants "l'Albatros" aus gemacht, in welchem meine Tochter an einem Schachturnier teilnahm.
Wenn sie auch finden dass meine Zeichnung noch nicht ganz fertig ist, haben sie sicher recht: Nach einer Weile interessierte ich mich viel mehr für das Porträt dieses Mannes, der inzwischen gekommen und stehengeblieben war, um mir beim Zeichnen zuzuschauen.
Ich fragte ihn, ob er ein bisschen Zeit hätte um sich zu setzen, damit ich ihn zeichnen könne, und er war einverstanden.
Sein Name ist Kofi, und er arbeitet in genau dem Restaurant, "l'Albatros".

Mon ami Philippe, qui m'a accompagné, a beau s'en moquer: Pour moi cela reste un des meilleurs concerts que j'ai jamais vus: Hier soir, après un workshop sur plusieurs jours, Elliott Sharp a présenté quelques compositions avec l'ensemble electroacoustique du conservatoire de Coni.

After a workshop of several days at the music academy of Cuneo (Italy), Elliott Sharp presented some compositions with the "ensemble elettroacustico del conservatorio di Cuneo" last night. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.
