Kaffeetassenschatten Nr. 8

Shadow of a coffee in a paper cup at the media center of Valbonne - with a piece of chocolate.
As you may have noticed, I hesitate between black and white when it comes to the very place where the cup of coffee stands - on the one hand, it should be black because no light touches that place, but on the other hand it isn't really part of the shadow of the object - so this time it is grey ...

Grass Shadows # 10

I was listening to "A Souvenir of Camber Sands" recently, the recording of a Throbbing Gristle show from 2004.

In his announcement at the beginning, Genesis P-Orridge says about Jhonn Balance, the co-founding member of Coil who had passed away a few days before, and to whom that show was dedicated, "He shall be the shadow of a flower".

Of course, that made me think about my shadow drawings.

I don't want to say that I see souls of passed away beloved ones in the shadows that I draw, but in some way this idea comes close to my consideration for shadows.

Plato disposes of shadows as not being constitutive of reality at all, and emphasizes the importance of perceiving the true form of reality rather than the mere shadows...
Sure, a good point, Plato.
But aren't shadows, on the other hand, so obviously immaterial, so decisively volatile, that the philosopher should contemplate them yet a little longer, trying to assimilate them?

No no, I don't want to misinterpret or deconstruct the allegory of the cave in a little blog post -
I just think that the freed prisoner, once he has discovered what really caused the shadows that he saw, still has a lot of things to learn by looking back at the shadows often to better understand how the world is made up - -

Shadow of a cup of coffee (4)

You thought that shadow had no color (except in "psychedelic" contexts)?
Well, here is the shadow of a cup of coffee from a coffee dispenser at my workplace - in a transparent plastic cup, so transparent that its shadow partly comes in the color of the coffee foam.

Kaffeetassenschatten Nr. 4

Shadows of cups of coffee (1 and 2)

A few weeks ago, Philippe offered me a large size Watercolour Moleskine, which I have inaugurated today, deciding to use it for a new "project": Shadows of cups of coffee (or other beverages that I may consume).
The first two drawings in this series are made in Monaco.

Happy ... !

The twelfth drawing in my series of "Audible Drawings" is another homage to Throbbing Gristle and the Gristleism - this time playing track number 3, "Twenty Jazz Funk Greats"! The drawing shows the shadow of the Gristleism, where, as usual, the red part is where the device touched the paper during the drawing.

You may think I've uploaded my drawing upside down, but nope - this is how I've drawn it. (Look at the grass shadows in the previous posts - they're shown upside down!).

Here is a two minute mp3 excerpt of the recording - the complete CD length is 46 minutes, with variable pitch settings on the Gristleism, but always the same track.

This is my way to wish everybody - to use Chris Carter's words -
"Happy Gristlemas"!

Audible Drawing # 11 - Gristleism Shadow #2

Audible Drawing Nr. 11 is my second "Gristleism Shadow" drawing - actually it's the shadow of the outer packaging of the Gristleism, while the Gristleism itself was standing aside and watching me draw, and playing track number 2, "Hamburger Lady", originally a Throbbing Gristle composition from 1978 or so.

The complete recording of the drawing process (45 minutes) should be available soon on a CDR together with the original drawing (as the inlet of the CD).

And by the way, thanks to Marc Weidenbaum from Disquiet.com who wrote a post about my previous audible drawing - if you're interested in audio art, don't hesitate to subscribe to his site!

Gristleism Shadow / Audible Drawing # 10

This week I received my impatiently awaited Gristleism - a good reason for another Audible Drawing!
So what you can see here among some thyme shadows, is the shadow of a Gristleism - placed on my block of Bristol paper with track one playing.
The red part is the position of the Gristleism (I colored it red once I removed the device from the paper, because .. my Gristleism is red).

12 x 24 cm, pencil and color pencil on Bristol paper, folded in the middle (to fit into a CD case).

The audio is about 31 minutes long: Pencil sound, some vehicles passing by at a distance, sometimes there's a bird, and the sound of track one, "Persuasion" (composed by Throbbing Gristle, of course). Here's just a two minute extract:

Here's a picture of the setup:

Ombres d'arbres

Here you can also see grass shadows, but that's just because I did't want to remove the grass - what I was after in this drawing are the other shadows, the "out of focus" ones that form a kind of background here. And they've been cast by a tree.

I was just looking for grass shadows again when suddenly my own portrait as a shadow stared at me from a tree. All I had to do was hold my paper against the tree - my pencils almost did all the rest on their own.

Grass Shadows nr. 9

When I was working on Grass Shadows nr. 9, a young man with a cardboard box and a knife sneaked around me, apparently a mushroom collector. There are actually quite a bit of mushrooms here, I have to admit.
However, I still prefer grass shadows, to me they look more interesting graphically (even though they may be less tasty with butter and parsley in a pan). Anyway, maybe one day I'll also take a mushroom shadow into my drawings.

Here is just a little souvenir photo from the surprise guest I've had the pleasure to have in my open-air studio today.

Even around noon the sun stands rather low now, and I hardly find a place where shadows of tree tops don't come within a few minutes to cover the grass shadows that I wanted to draw. Everything is in motion, everything is flickering.

Grass shadows nr. 6

Well, you may think: Sure, an homage to the beauty of natural phenomena ... the immortalization of ephemeral moments... so what?
Hah hah! Know this:
In the end, it's us and all that we create that passes away, while nature will continue to create her shadowplays every day!
So what's ephemeral?
Go and do what you want - your politics, your business, your intrigues; I'll dilly-dally on my way as long as I can, drawing inconsiderable things!

Was also ist vergänglich?

Ombres d'herbe no. 5

Grass shadows Nr. 5
A magic day. There was almost no wind, and the pencil scratching was rather calm today. Gentle noise from a building site spilled over frome time to time, mixing with bird conversations and sounds from my "Buddha Machine" iPod app. The distant branch of a tree seemed to split the sun in two, doubling the shadows of some blades of grass on the edge of my sheet.
An ant walked over my drawing as I worked. I knew I was doing something right.

Grasschatten Nr. 5.
